16th Street Mall

The 16th Street Mall is a bustling pedestrian and transit mall in Denver, Colorado. Stretching along 16th Street from Wewatta Street near Union Station to Broadway at Civic Center Station, this mile-long, tree-lined promenade is peppered with outdoor cafes, shops, restaurants, and public spaces, making it a central hub for leisure and social interaction in the city.

Designed by world-renowned architectural firm I.M. Pei & Partners and completed in 1982, the 16th Street Mall was intended to revitalize Denver’s downtown area. Its design features a distinctive patterned granite sidewalk that mimics the skin of a diamondback rattlesnake, paying homage to the native wildlife of Colorado. Over the years, the Mall has gone through various enhancements to maintain its status as a key feature of the city’s urban landscape.

  • The 16th Street Mall was originally built in 1982.
  • It runs diagonally from northwest to southeast, which is unique as most of the city’s streets are aligned on a north-south, east-west grid.
  • The Mall is home to over 300 locally owned/chain stores, over 50 restaurants, and the Denver Pavilions entertainment complex.
  • A free shuttle service, the MallRide, runs up and down the Mall, stopping on every block.

The 16th Street Mall is located in downtown Denver and is easily accessible from various parts of the city. It’s within walking distance to many attractions, including LoDo (Lower Downtown), the Colorado Convention Center, and the Denver Performing Arts Complex.
